Uganda Hosts Afghan Refugees

Afghanistan located in south-central Aisa often mistaken for being located in the middle east has yet again been in the public eye because of the notorious Taliban that has taken over Afghanistan yet again. The war in Afghanistan began after the 9/11 terrorist attack in the twin towers in new york 20 years ago by Al Qaeda! The US troops went to invade Afghanistan and left in August 2021 after almost 20 years. Once news broke that the Taliban have taken control in Afghanistan thousands of Afghans fled the country on US military planes scattered globally. Uganda has excepted around 2,000 Afghan refugees. Uganda is one of the world's leading nations in hosting refugees and the number one in Africa, mostly hosting refugees from Sudan and Congo. Uganda has been criticized to accept 2000 afghans during a national coronavirus pandemic, Uganda was recently on its second lockdown due to the high rise in covid cases. "Uganda’s doors will remain open to refugees, for us it is not only a humanitarian decison, but we know the value they add to their host nation" Jeje Odongo Uganda minister of foreign affairs There are a few similarities between Afghanistan and Uganda, however also differences. Both countries are very religious although Uganda is mostly Christian and Afghanistan Muslim. The gender roles in Uganda in 2021 are still very prevalent Men generally are still the breadwinners of the home, and although more women are working and having successful careers the man is generally the head of the household similarly is the case in most Afghani culture. Family is very vital in Uganda people spend a lot of time without seeing family and eating dinner as a family is practiced. A neighbour is as good as a family member. Lastly, the love of food Ugandans will use any excuse to eat, it's a form of socializing and just an excuse to eat as part of routine mainly high carb dishes rice, meats, etc, same as Afghans a lot of rice dishes with bread, etc. A major difference with Afgnais and Ugandans is that Ugandans love to drink alcohol, one of Africa well-known places for its nightlife and love of alcohol, however poor a Ugandan is if they love to drink they will find a way to purchase alcohol, but in Afghanistan alcohol s banned it is a Muslim nation which prohibits the drinking of alcohol. https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2021/9/23/ugandas-door-will-remain-open-to-refugees https://www.aa.com.tr/en/africa/uganda-bracing-to-host-2-000-afghan-refugees/2345407
