My Experience Teaching English In Barcelona!
I never imagined In a million years that I would be an English Teacher in the heartof Barcelona at a private english school. It’s hard for me to believe! I was in a long distance relationship my partner lived in Spain and I wanted a career change, I needed a break from 9-5 world. I never expected to fall in love with Barcelona . But that’s exactly what I’ve did, and I don’t regret it for a second. I applied for an English teaching role which required n prior experience I only needed to be a native speaker and have the right documents to work in Spain,I took the gamble and left. I had no preconceived ideas of what the next few months had in store for me, l had been to Barcelona several times, although I had not lived there. I had spent so much of my life planning, so for once I wanted to let go and take a risk. I wanted a new experience, improve my Spanish, and also strengthen my relationship. I was lucky to have landed an English role in the heart of Passeig de Gracia my role consisted of teaching general English classes to Spanish English learners, levels ranging from A1 beginners to C2 proficient users. I had my classroom and I followed a lesson plan which was made up of 3 activities. To start with a general warm-up to get to know the student and how they are generally doing. Finishing off with a reading exercise. Many of the students opted to take exams for an awarded certificate afterward, students had separate listening exercises for: CAE, IETS,TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS and the Cambridge ESL exams (CPE, FCE, PET, KET) If had a cancellation or free lesson space I did homework collection. This was a grueling experience I had no prior experience and I also had very limited knowledge of English grammar, no practice since school so it was very challenging for me, also I had to do career progress essays. As part of the benefits of this job role we received free accommodation, a flat in the center I shared with 3 other teachers one I am still friends with now, the flat was filthy and in noisy areas, but it was free! ADVANTAGES Weather Friendly people Healthy lifestyle Food/Music Improved my Spanish DISADVANTAGES Poor Customer service Long working hours Low salary Language barrier pickpockets Home sick Overall my experience teaching English in Barcelona was amazing! There were pros and cons ofBarcelona, however, overall it was amazing. I gained so much knowledge as well as confidence it changed my life for the better. As soon as I landed a teaching role within a few weeks I moved abroad to Barcelona. I recommend teaching English abroad whilst emerging yourself in the culture at the same time.
